YGCIC is the intermediary for an innovative year-around employment program sponsored by the San Francisco Department of Children, Youth, and Their Families. The program is a collaboration between YGCIC, Juvenile Probation Department, MYEEP, and Workreation (SF Dept. of Recreation and Parks). Youth who are actively engage in the program have significantly reduced incidents of re-arrest (less than 1%) and anecdotally report significant life skills enhancement. Initial career exploration is facilitated by Occupational Therapy & Training Program (OTTP).
As the intermediary, YGCIC works with Deputy Probation Officers to recruit and orient youth to this jobs program and to assist in the application process. Schools, the Public Defender, and CBO's also refer youth. Follow-up and support during the program are provided by YGCIC for both the youth and the agencies in which they are placed. Youth may be drawn from and/or referred to the other YGCIC programs as needed to complete a holistic approach to supporting their needs.
Youth in New Directions Employment Program receive more intense counseling, tutoring if needed, and biweekly workshops to improve life skills. A transition plan is developed with each participant so that upon completion all stakeholders are aware of the next steps to be taken. Approximately 260 youth are placed annually and approximately 375 youth are identified as potential candidates through referrals.
